How To Go About Creating A DIY AR Sandbox?

Equipment Needed

  1. 1BenQMW632ST or similar projector on a precision projector mount
  2. 2X-Box Kinect 1414 with its USB adaptor
  3. 3Preferably Core i5 computer with at least 3Ghz RAM
  4. 4NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or similar high-quality video card for water simulation and a quick rendition
  5. 5White Play Sand or Kinetic sand (150 – 250 lbs)
  6. 630 by 40-inch plywood box supported by 4×4 legs and playhouse stands

Fill the finished box with around 250 lbs of white play sand. It’s recommended that you use regular medium or small fraction quartz or washed sand that you find along a sea beach or river. Use certified sand that does not produce too much dust.

Setting Up Your AR Sandbox

To set up the projector, use what’s called a projector mount. It’s basically some sort of stand made out of metal or something similar that lets you get your projector off the ground.

Mount the projector 40 inches above the sand. This is the recommended height, so the bracket for the projector is 40 inches above the sandbox, fitted on the vertical pole.

The projector slides right into the mount and you can align it along the X and y-axis on auto and the Z axis by hand. Make sure you’re getting a good picture in the sandbox.

Align the X-BOX Kinect at the same height close to the projector. This sensor should be aligned to the center axis of the sandbox for accurate projections.

You’ll need an adapter to connect the X-Box Kinect to your computer.

This concept, design, and programs to create this type of sandbox with calibrated topographic effects were developed at the University of California – Davis.

The University developed software consisting of the Kinect 3D video processing framework, the Vrui Virtual Reality (VR) development toolkit, and the SARndbox software package. You can download these software packages under the GNU General Public License.
